Author of ten books of poetry, essays, memoir, and fiction, John Daniel has won three Oregon Book Awards, a Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, a Pushcart Prize, the John Burroughs Nature Essay Award, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. His newest book, a novel titled Gifted, is the story of a young man with a spiritual imagination and a rare affinity for wild creatures who comes of age under harsh circumstances, negotiating the wildness of his home country, his human relationships, and the emerging complexities of his own being. A former Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and James Thurber Writer-in-Residence at Ohio State University—and a former logger, hod carrier, railroader, and rock climbing instructor—Daniel teaches widely in workshops and writer-in-residence positions around the country. He lives with his wife, Marilyn Daniel, in the Coast Range foothills west of Eugene, Oregon.
John will speak about his life as a writer, and moving from a lifetime of writing nonfiction like Rogue River Journal to his first foray into fiction with Gifted, published in April 2017.
